The author describes two personality types: "The Builder" (velocity-focused) and "The Thinker" (problem-solving focused). AI coding assistants satisfy the first while starving the second. The result: shipping faster while feeling stuck professionally.

The pattern matches research findings. A 2025 Microsoft study of 319 knowledge workers found higher AI confidence inversely correlated with critical thinking effort. Separate research tracking frequent AI users showed lower critical-thinking scores. Among educators surveyed by College Board in 2024-2025, 87% worried AI impedes critical thinking, and 82% flagged dependency risks.

The pragmatist's dilemma is real: when AI delivers a "70% solution" in a fraction of the time, rejecting it feels irrational. The engineer notes even a third manual rewrite would beat AI output quality, but the velocity hit is hard to justify.

What enterprise leaders should watch:

First, the skill atrophy question. GitHub Copilot discussions on Reddit and developer forums increasingly feature threads about "rebuilding coding fundamentals" and "deliberate practice without assistants." If your senior engineers are raising similar concerns, that's data.

Second, the hiring implications. When interview candidates have prepared using AI assistance, how do you assess baseline problem-solving ability? The old proxies may not work.

Third, the project allocation puzzle. Some teams are deliberately mixing "AI-off" work into sprints to maintain deep skills. Others are treating AI tools like calculators: useful for known problems, wrong for learning.

The post has no answers, which is honest. Neither do we yet. But the question is worth asking: are your engineering teams building velocity at the cost of the problem-solving capacity you'll need when AI can't help?

The alternative view: AI can enhance thinking when used as a "thinking partner" rather than answer generator. Studies on AI-assisted learning show gains when tools provide scaffolding and feedback rather than solutions. The difference is deliberate design.

History suggests: new tools always change how we think. Whether that change serves you depends on how intentionally you manage it. The enterprises asking these questions now are ahead of the ones who'll face them later as a crisis.
