TSMC upgrades Japan plant to 3nm chips, total investment hits $17B
TSMC will produce 3nm chips at its second Kumamoto factory, pivoting from the original 6-12nm plan. The upgrade makes Japan the first country outside Taiwan with 3nm capacity, targeting AI data centers and autonomous vehicles as automotive chip demand weakens.
