Multiple Python implementations using SerpAPI and similar SERP data providers have emerged in recent weeks, focused on answering a different question than traditional rank trackers: "Is my website cited in the AI summary, and how prominently?"

The shift matters because AI Overviews often answer user queries directly on the results page. Users get information without clicking through, which means traditional ranking position matters less than citation presence and order.

What the tools actually track

These Python-based trackers typically query specific keywords, detect whether an AI Overview appears, extract which domains are cited as sources, and determine citation order. Unlike traditional rank tracking that monitors positions 1-10, this tracks visibility within a fundamentally different format.

The implementations rely on structured SERP data APIs rather than browser automation or HTML scraping. Raw scraping proves unreliable for AI Overviews due to JavaScript rendering, frequent layout changes, and regional variations.
