What it does
Moltbot is a self-hosted AI gateway that connects models (OpenAI, Claude, Ollama) to system-level capabilities. You control it through WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, or 50+ other integrations.
It maintains persistent memory via Markdown files and operates as a 24/7 "digital employee" - monitoring repos, drafting emails, managing calendars, even making purchases through browser control. The use case is compelling: proactive automation that standard AI assistants can't deliver.
The security problem
Shell access through a chat interface is exactly what it sounds like. Misconfigured instances have exposed control dashboards to the internet. Some treat remote connections as local, bypassing authentication entirely. Security researchers flag three material risks:
Control plane exposure: Open dashboards leak API keys, conversation logs, and config data. In documented cases, attackers gained elevated host privileges.
Prompt injection blast radius: Malicious input can manipulate the bot into running unintended commands. With shell access and admin APIs, a successful injection enables data theft or lateral movement.
Upstream data leakage: Prompts and tool outputs flow to AI providers. Without scoping, this creates compliance exposure for regulated industries.

The technical setup barrier and sandbox efficacy concerns echo early Kubernetes adoption.
